Kasmuel McOure, a well-known Kenyan activist, stirred controversy on September 18 after a photo of him with United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Majority Chief Whip Silvanus Osoro went viral. The images drew criticism from some Kenyans, who accused McOure of cozying up to government officials he has previously criticized.
In response to the backlash, McOure explained that the encounter was unplanned, occurring during a visit to a members’ club where he often meets various Kenyans. He took the opportunity to voice his concerns directly to Osoro, discussing serious issues such as extrajudicial killings, unmet government promises, and the rule of law.
“We disagreed on several issues and agreed on a few,” McOure shared, emphasizing that their conversation was civil and even included moments of humor.
Critics suggested that McOure was abandoning his activist roots, but he countered that activism encompasses more than just protests. He highlighted the importance of speaking truth to power whenever the opportunity arises, stating, “You cannot only dismiss me to die in the streets, as if my leadership was destined to end there.”
McOure reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for underprivileged youth and families affected by government actions. He announced plans to enhance civic engagement through intensified door-to-door campaigns and broader civic education efforts, stating, “We will drain this swamp and take political power!”
Despite the unplanned nature of the encounter, McOure remains focused on his mission and aims to connect with communities both online and offline.
