Gachagua: My Impeachment Has President Ruto's Approval

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that the impeachment motion against him in Parliament has the backing of President William Ruto. During a press briefing on October 7, Gachagua stated that such motions cannot proceed without presidential approval, emphasizing that serious issues like impeachment require the president’s nod within the UDA party structure. “For the motion to reach the floor of the National Assembly, it can only be sanctioned by the president,” he remarked.

In response, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah refuted Gachagua’s assertions, stating that Members of Parliament do not need permission from the executive to initiate an impeachment process. This disagreement highlights the tension within the ruling party regarding accountability and leadership dynamics.

Gachagua also addressed rumors about his potential resignation, firmly asserting that he has no intention of stepping down. He emphasized that he was elected by over 7 million Kenyans, arguing that it would be inappropriate to resign without considering public opinion. “How dare you suggest to him that he can do so without public participation? I will fight to the end,” he declared.

The situation illustrates the complexities of political maneuvering in Kenya, as Gachagua navigates both internal party politics and public perception. With the looming threat of impeachment and conflicting statements from party leaders, the political landscape remains tense as the Deputy President seeks to maintain his position amid rising challenges.
