48 Mt. Kenya MPs Shift Support from DP Gachagua to Endorse CS Kindiki

Forty-eight Members of Parliament from the Mt. Kenya region and the diaspora have expressed their support for Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their representative to the national government.

48 Mt. Kenya MPs Shift Support from DP Gachagua to Endorse CS Kindiki

On September 12, 2024, the endorsement was announced during a declaration where the leaders underscored their dedication to furthering the region's development goals by working with CS Kindiki.

The leaders from various constituencies decided to designate Kindiki as their official liaison with the Executive branch.

They unanimously commended Kindiki for his leadership in managing national government operations and tackling security challenges.

Backing Interior CS Kindiki, rather than aligning with Deputy President Gachagua, has triggered speculation about potential political divisions within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

The MPs emphasized the need for unified leadership focused on the region’s development, especially concerning development projects and economic reforms.

This choice is seen by many analysts as a slight to Deputy President Gachagua, who has been a prominent figure in the Mt. Kenya region and closely associated with President William Ruto, particularly in consolidating regional support during the 2022 election.

The decision to support Kindiki over Gachagua suggests possible underlying tensions or dissatisfaction with Gachagua's leadership.

Despite reaffirming their support for President Ruto’s administration, the MPs stressed the urgency of accelerating regional development projects through Kindiki’s coordination.

Their priorities include improving prices for agricultural products like coffee, tea, and potatoes, and completing stalled infrastructure projects.

Endorsing Kindiki is viewed as a strategic realignment within the government, potentially reshaping the power dynamics in Mt. Kenya’s political landscape.

As Gachagua works to strengthen his regional influence, this endorsement of Kindiki highlights emerging alternative leadership within the Kenya Kwanza coalition. The statement concluded with a call for regional unity, emphasizing that development goals should take precedence over internal political conflicts.
