The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has nominated Abdi Mohamud to succeed Twalib Mbarak as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
In a statement, EACC said Abdi will be vetted by the National Assembly.
“Pursuant to Article 250 [12] of the Constitution as read with Section 16(1) of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2011, the Commission has nominated Mr. Abdi Mohamud, MBS, for approval by the National Assembly as the next EACC CEO,” read a part of the statement.
EACC nomination follows a competitive process
According to the authority, Abdi’s nomination is following a competitive process involving 14 candidates shortlisted from 172 applicants.
“By close of the application deadline on Monday, 7th October 2024, the Commission received One Hundred and Seventy. Two (172) applications out of which fourteen (14) candidates were shortlisted and the full list published in the print media on 11th October 2024. The interviews for the shortlisted candidates were conducted from 19th to 21st November 2024,” read a part of the notice.
The commission had called for applications for the position through an advertisement published on the EACC website and the media on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
Currently, Mohamud deputizes the EACC CEO in the discharge of his statutory, administrative, and policy responsibilities in the Commission’s daily operations and management.
Before becoming Deputy CEO, he served as the Commission’s Director in charge of investigations for over ten years.
Mohamud testified against Gachagua
Mohamud testified as witness in the impeachment trial of the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in October, 2024. He gave evidence over allegations of a conflict of interest relating to the matter as well as allegations that the Deputy President had received gifts in the form of cows from the public.
He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and an investigator with over 30 years of experience investigating corruption and economic crimes. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Security and Risk Management.
Mohamud is set to succeed Twalib Abdallah Mbarak formally took office in January, 2019. He is the Commission’s second Secretary/Chief Executive Officer since EACC was established to replace the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission in 2012.
